What happens when you get arrested in GTA 6?

GTA 6’s first trailer opens with one of its two leads in custody, so the question of what an arrest means in play will be asked early. The material answers the story half and not the play half, and this page keeps the two apart.

What the footage shows

The story half is clear. In one official screenshot Lucia stands in an orange jumpsuit with her wrists cuffed in front of her, hair in cornrows with two long braids, three other inmates around her and an officer’s belt in the foreground; it is the only official image that puts a protagonist inside a custodial setting. At 0:49 of Trailer 2 the camera looks up along the perimeter of the correctional facility in low evening light: a chain-link fence on steel posts, a second, taller one behind it, both topped with coils of razor wire, and an octagonal watchtower on a white shaft with a railed gallery, a floodlight, a dish and an antenna mast, a guard standing on the gallery. A perimeter with a manned tower is a working prison, not a set. On Mega Noticias a corrections item puts a purple-haired inmate in an orange jumpsuit beside a gold sheriff’s badge.

The play half is thinner. At 0:49 of Trailer 1 a body-worn camera shows an officer in dark uniform with hold of a man in a pale vest in front of a bright doorway, a second officer in the foreground with POLICE on his vest. At 5:08 of the Extended Look an officer with POLICE across his carrier stands in a green-lit room with a pistol at his side while a second armed man aims and a third backs away. And the wanted display runs to six stars with evidence icons under them, which is the machinery an arrest would come out of. The news reports COPS ARREST MAN WHO FLIPPED HIS CAR AFTER PEEWEES DINE AND DASH.

None of that is the moment of being busted. No frame shows a player character with hands up, a Busted screen, a police station door, a fine or a cell that follows from play rather than from the story. Whether the prison on screen is somewhere you can be sent, or only somewhere Lucia has been, is not something the material says.

What nobody knows

• Whether an arrest in play ends in the prison on screen, a police station or a fine.
• What is taken from you: money, weapons, ammunition, a vehicle.
• Whether you can resist or break away, and at what wanted level the police stop shooting and start arresting.
• Whether time passes in custody, and whether the evidence icons clear.

How Grand Theft Auto V did it

This is the reference, not a prediction. The GTA Wiki’s page on being busted says that in GTA V the player respawned “outside the nearest police station”, and that “Only ammo and body armor are confiscated. If the player has a weapon drawn when being busted, they will also lose that weapon.” Declining to retry a mission after an arrest cost “some money in ‘bail fees'”. You could “resist arrest by breaking away during the arrest” when held at gunpoint, at the price of a two-star wanted level, and the screen turned grey with the word BUSTED. The page mentions no prison you were sent to; Bolingbroke Penitentiary stood on the map as a place to drive past and break into for a job, as this site’s prison page notes, not as a sentence.

What this page becomes on launch day

From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: what an arrest costs, where you come back, and whether the prison is somewhere play can send you, each with the date it was tested. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
