GTA 6, how to

Can you ride or drive trains in GTA 6?

Short answer

Two trains are in the material and neither is boarded. A freight train crosses a steel truss bridge in Mount Kalaga in a press still, a yellow and dark blue locomotive with open hoppers behind it, and a metro car stands on an elevated guideway over the water at 17:28 of the Extended Look, beside a motorway deck, with an elevated railway crossing a Little Haiti street in another frame. No frame shows a platform, a ticket or a cab. In Grand Theft Auto V the freight train could not be driven and would not stop for you.

The series has a long history of trains you can see and rarely ride. GTA 6’s material shows two kinds, a freight train in the hills and a metro over the water, and this page is what those frames establish, what they leave open, and how the last game’s train behaved.

What the footage shows

The freight train is in the sixth of the Mount Kalaga press stills, crossing a steel through-truss bridge on concrete piers high over a green river: a diesel locomotive with yellow flanks and a dark blue nose and cab, running cab first, with at least four open cars behind it carrying a heaped dark load. It is the background of the kayak still, with the paddler below and a flood gauge marked in feet at the left of the frame, and the train’s own page reads it from there.

The metro is at 17:28.93 of the Extended Look, in the frame with the green kayak and the water taxi: two elevated decks on the same line of plain concrete piers across the water towards the towers, the narrower, higher one a guideway with a white-and-grey car standing on it, rounded at the ends with a dark window band, the wider deck beside it a road with traffic and tail lights. In Little Haiti an elevated railway crosses the frame beyond a line of police cars with their lights on.

That is what the material holds: a working freight line in the hills and an elevated metro through the middle of the city. The metro’s page notes that public transport is not a given in the series and that a line through the centre is a feature rather than scenery. What no frame shows is a station, a platform, a passenger, a driver’s cab or the player anywhere near a train.

What nobody knows

  • Whether the metro can be ridden, and whether it has stations you can enter.
  • Whether either train can be driven, boarded or stopped.
  • Whether the freight line runs on a schedule you can use, for a heist or a hitch.
  • Whether a train can be derailed, and what it does to a car on the track.

How Grand Theft Auto V did it

This is the reference, not a prediction. In GTA V’s story the freight train was not yours to drive: the one exception the GTA Wiki records is the mission Derailed, where Trevor “enters through the rear-right door and knocks the locomotive driver” and “the player can briefly control the locomotive’s speed and horn”. Outside that mission it was unstoppable and indestructible: “Trains can not be derailed even when scripted outside of the Derailed mission”, and the train “will not stop when the track is obstructed, and can kill any character/NPC instantly when confronting it head-on (with the exception of Trevor with his Special Ability active)”. The wiki’s page points to a separate one for the Metrotrain, which this site has not read; the elevated metro above is the thing to compare it with when the game is out.

What this page becomes on launch day

From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: whether the metro can be ridden, whether a train can be driven or stopped, and what happens on the track, each with the date it was tested. Until then the short answer at the top stands.

Where this comes from

Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked the platform holder is Sony or Microsoft describing their own store or hardware, not Rockstar. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
