How do you swim and dive in GTA 6?

A state modelled on Florida is mostly coastline, and the footage treats the water as a place rather than a boundary. Divers on a reef, jet skis in a channel at sunset, a kayak on a river with a flood gauge beside it. What it never shows is a swimmer with nothing on, or a meter running down while somebody is under. This page is built from what is there.

What the footage shows

The dive is a press screenshot: two figures in the water off the Keys, one in full scuba gear with a tank, mask and fins reaching towards the reef, a second behind and above, sunlight in shafts, a green sea turtle in the foreground and the coral-grown pilings of an old pier on the bottom. It is framed as something worth doing, with wildlife and something to look at, rather than as a way to get somewhere.

The surface belongs to craft. At 17:25 in the Extended Look three jet skis run a channel towards the skyline with the minimap in the corner, which makes it the player’s own footage and not a cutscene. At 17:28 the camera sits behind a woman paddling a green kayak on a city waterway, and a press screenshot puts an orange one on a river in Mount Kalaga. Nobody in any frame is swimming unaided. Whether that is because the footage never needed it or because the water is dangerous is not something the frames say.

One more frame is worth naming for what it does not settle. The weapon wheel carries three meters, a heart, a lightning bolt and an eye. None of them is a lung, and the frame is on dry land. If a breath meter exists it is not one of these three, or not visibly.

What nobody knows

• Whether there is a breath meter, and how long you can stay under without a tank.
• How you dive under from the surface, and how you come back up.
• Whether scuba gear has to be bought or found, and whether its air runs out.
• Whether the wildlife bites. The turtle is the only animal in the diving frame.
• Whether the water still ends a police search, as it did last time.

How Grand Theft Auto V did it

This is the reference, not a prediction. Grand Theft Auto V gave each character a lung capacity stat, which set how long they could hold their breath underwater before losing health, and raised it by diving, swimming underwater and, according to the GTA Wiki, practising yoga. Stamina governed how long you could swim at full speed. You could dive into the water from platforms, use a knife underwater, and go deeper to lose a wanted level; scuba gear came as a full set, and tiger sharks could kill a swimmer outright. Diving in that game was mostly a means to an end, which is exactly what the reef screenshot above is not.

What this page becomes on launch day

From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: the inputs, the breath limit if there is one, where the gear comes from and what the water does to a chase, each with the date it was tested. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
