GTA 6, how to
How do you set a waypoint and follow the GPS in GTA 6?
Short answer
The minimap is in the footage and the map is not. At 15:49 of the Extended Look the corner map draws a pink route from the player's arrow to a marker, with the distance in feet and a compass letter on its rim; in the race frames the same map shows the circuit and the field. No frame shows the full map, a waypoint being set, or the pause screen. Until launch, the reference is Grand Theft Auto V's radar and GPS.

Where the footage shows it
The biggest question people ask about GTA 6 is where the map is, and the honest answer is on its own page: Rockstar has not published one. What the footage does show is the small map in the corner of the screen doing its job, and that is enough for a guide about finding your way, if not for one about the state.
What the footage shows
At 15:49 of the Extended Look the bottom left corner carries the minimap: a rounded rectangle with soft edges. A pink line runs from the player marker, a white arrow in a dark disc, to a pink dot at the top; a figure at the top left reads 174 ft; a single letter in a black disc sits on the right-hand rim, where a compass mark would sit, too small on the true pixel grid for this site to read. The route follows the road round the block rather than cutting straight to the marker, so the map is drawing a driving route and not a bearing, and the distance is in feet, which fits a state modelled on Florida.
In the race frames at 17:41 the same map shows the circuit as a pale grey ribbon on green with the field as white dots, nine ahead of the player’s arrow and two behind. The map, then, changes what it draws with what you are doing. Whether it washes red or blue under a wanted level, as the series has done since Grand Theft Auto IV, is not something any measured frame on this site shows, and no frame shows the full map, the pause screen or a waypoint being placed.
What nobody knows
- How a waypoint is set, and whether the route line is a waypoint or a mission marker.
- What the letter on the rim is, and whether the map rotates or stays north-up.
- Whether the map can be enlarged, and what the full map looks like.
- What the map shows under a wanted level: cones, a search circle, or the icons from the wanted display.
- Whether distances switch to metres anywhere, and whether the GPS speaks.
How Grand Theft Auto V did it
This is the reference, not a prediction. Grand Theft Auto V’s radar showed the map top-down when you were on foot and tilted into a slanted perspective in a vehicle. With a GPS route active, the GTA Wiki notes, a direction indicator sat at the bottom left and a mileage indicator at the bottom right. When the police lost sight of you the radar drew field-of-vision indicators on the police blips, the cones the wanted-level guide describes, and pressing down on the d-pad zoomed the radar out to show more of the map. Waypoints were set on the pause map and the route drawn to them. A pink line with a distance in feet is that system in a new colour; whether it does more is a launch-day question.
What this page becomes on launch day
From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: setting a waypoint, the full map, what the minimap does under a wanted level and in a race, and what the letter on the rim means, each with the date it was checked. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
Where this comes from
Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked the platform holder is Sony or Microsoft describing their own store or hardware, not Rockstar. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
