GTA 6, how to
How do cover and stealth work in GTA 6?
Short answer
The footage shows people using cover and nobody explaining it. In the jewellery store a man crouches behind the counter while two gunmen hold the room; at the shooting range the targets stand behind plates, drums and sandbags; in a green-lit room an officer and an unmarked man aim pistols at a third who is backing away. No frame shows a cover prompt, a crouch or a takedown. Until launch, the reference is Grand Theft Auto V's stealth mode.

Where the footage shows it
Cover is the mechanic every third-person shooter has and no trailer ever shows, because a person pressed against a wall is not a picture anybody cuts a trailer around. GTA 6’s material is no exception. What it does show is a world built with cover in it, and a HUD that tracks whether you have been seen. This page stays inside that.
What the footage shows
At 18:01 of the Extended Look, inside the jewellery store, a man in black is crouched behind the counter at the far left while two gunmen hold the room. He is a bystander, not the player, and the frame does not say whether he is in a cover system or an animation; it says the game stages people behind things when guns come out. At 18:32 the shooting range is built the same way: silhouette targets behind low steel plates, oil drums, sandbags and pallets, spread across two sides of a square, which is a course designed around the idea of shooting from and at cover.
The closest thing to a fight on foot is at 5:08, where an officer with POLICE across his back and a second armed man in a plain plate carrier aim pistols at a third man who is backing away with his arms out low. Nobody is behind anything. Above all of it sits the wanted display with its icons for what the police know, which is the part of stealth a HUD can show: not whether you are hidden, but whether you were seen.
What nobody knows
- Whether there is a cover button, blind fire, and a peek, as the series has had since Grand Theft Auto IV.
- Whether you can crouch freely, or only in a stealth mode.
- Whether silent takedowns exist, and whether they keep the wanted display clean.
- Whether the two-figure icon in the wanted display means witnesses, and whether stealth prevents it.
- Whether a stealth stat exists.
How Grand Theft Auto V did it
This is the reference, not a prediction. Grand Theft Auto V had a stealth mode in which the character crouched and moved quietly, backed by a stealth skill that, in the GTA Wiki’s words, let you move quickly and quietly and grew by remaining undetected and performing silent takedowns. Sneaking up behind somebody let a character drop them with a single chop to the neck. Cover was the ordinary third-person kind, inherited from the game before: press against a wall or a car, lean out to fire, or fire without looking. None of it was drawn on the HUD the way GTA 6 draws what the police know.
What this page becomes on launch day
From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: the cover input, crouching, takedowns, and what any of it does to the wanted display, each with the date it was tested. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
Where this comes from
Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked the platform holder is Sony or Microsoft describing their own store or hardware, not Rockstar. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
