How do you race in GTA 6?

Racing is one of the few things the Extended Look shows as the player’s own play, HUD and all. Two events, two surfaces, one readout. What the frames cannot show is the part a guide is usually for: where the races are, how you get into one and what winning is worth. That comes on launch day, and until then the last game is the only reference.

What the footage shows

At 17:41 the camera sits behind a white touring car with a rear wing, mid-corner on a damp surface, and the field runs three and four abreast into the braking zone ahead. The circuit has red and white kerbs, concrete barriers faced with advertising, a chain-link debris fence and a light mast, and beyond the fence a trailer and a yellow marquee rather than a grandstand. The cars carry numbers and liveries: 43 on a door, 88 across a rear window, sponsor decals. This is a series with a grid, not a street scramble.

The readout says what kind of event it is. LAP 1 / 2 in a slanted box, the position 11 / 16 on a chequered ground with a magenta bar, a running time to hundredths, and a minimap with the circuit drawn on it and the field as white dots. Two seconds later the camera car is up to tenth. At 18:34 the same readout sits over a graded dirt track through rocky scrub, from the chase camera behind a green motocross bike, with twelve riders in the field and spectators on the rocks. A press screenshot from Mount Kalaga shows the other face of the same thing: dirt bikes and a quad through mud beside graffitied silos, mid-pack.

What nobody knows

• How a race is entered: a marker, a contact, a phone, a meet.
• Whether there is an entry fee and what a win pays.
• Whether you race your own car or a provided one, and whether classes are enforced.
• Whether the circuit is the raceway signposted on the highway, and whether races run at fixed times.
• Whether sea races, street races at night, or a triathlon exist alongside these two.

How Grand Theft Auto V did it

This is the reference, not a prediction. Grand Theft Auto V’s street races belonged to Franklin alone: they unlocked after the mission Shift Work, ran between eight in the evening and five in the morning, and each new one arrived by a text message from Hao. The GTA Wiki counts five, the first free to enter and the rest with rising entry fees, and prize money that rose with them. Off-road races were open to all three leads and came by text from Ron after the mission Mr. Philips: six of them, four for bikes and quads and two for trucks, each unlocked by winning the one before, each paying the same modest sum, and driveable in your own vehicle as long as it fitted the class. Sea races existed as a separate strand. The circuit with kerbs and a debris fence at 17:41 has no ancestor in that list, which is why the question of what it is stays open above.

What this page becomes on launch day

From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: every race, where it starts, what it costs and pays, the vehicle rules and the times, each with the date it was run. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
