GTA 6, how to
What animals are in GTA 6, and can you hunt alligators?
Short answer
The official material is full of them. Alligators walk into a shop on a security feed, ride caged in a pickup's bed through the swamp, lie dead on a jetty beside hunters and float live around an airboat in the duckweed; deer drink at a pool in Mount Kalaga with a big cat walking towards them; an iguana lies on a road in the Keys and another is draped over a woman's shoulders in a bar; wading birds stand in the shallows. What you can shoot, catch or keep is in no frame. Grand Theft Auto V had wildlife too, and a hunting job for Trevor.

Where the footage shows it
- An alligator walking into a shop on a security feed
- A pickup wading the swamp with a caged trailer of alligators
- Grassrivers: a dead alligator on a jetty, three live ones around an airboat
- Deer at a drinking spot with a big cat walking towards them
- Hunting: two hunters with rifles in the pines
- An iguana on the warm tarmac of a Keys street
- An iguana over a woman's shoulders in the pool bar
- Wading birds in the shallows beside the floatplane
- Commanding a dog: SCOLD, PET and the rest
Leonida is drawn as a place with animals in it, and the official material keeps putting them in front of the camera. This page is the wildlife as the frames show it, what none of them settle about hunting or handling any of it, and what the last game did with its animals.
What the footage shows
Alligators first, because there are more of them than anything else. At 0:47 of Trailer 1 one walks in through the open door of a convenience store while a security feed watches and nobody inside turns round. In a Grassrivers press still a camouflaged pickup wades the swamp with a cage of alligators in its bed and a man with a rifle standing among them, a police SUV following through the water and a helicopter overhead. The swamp’s own page has the rest: two men and a woman posing on a jetty with a dead alligator laid across the boards and a dead wildcat behind it, a bearded man raising a break-action shotgun in a shed where an alligator hangs from a beam, and an airboat photographed straight down in bright green duckweed with three live alligators around it, one right at the bow.
Inland the cast changes. A Mount Kalaga press still shows four deer at a drinking spot, one of them lying down, and a big cat walking through the shallow water towards them; predator and prey in one frame, and the park’s page carries it. The same park is where two hunters walk through long grass with rifles. In the Keys an iguana lies on the warm tarmac of a village street while a mobility scooter and a bus go past, with a dog at the left of the frame; in a bar, a woman has a live iguana draped over her shoulders. Two white wading birds stand in the shallows beside the floatplane, and the one animal that is plainly yours is the dog, with SCOLD and PET on its own prompts.
What follows is limited. The hunters, the rifles and the dead animals say hunting is a thing that happens, and the hunting guide takes that as far as the frames allow. An alligator walking into a shop with nobody reacting says the animals move through the world on their own. Whether any of them can be shot, caught, sold or kept by the player is in no frame.
What nobody knows
- Which animals can be hunted, caught or kept.
- Whether alligators attack, and what the caged ones in the pickup are for.
- Whether an iguana or a bird is anything but scenery.
- Whether there is a photography challenge or a collection tied to wildlife.
- What the big cat at the drinking spot is: one page here calls it a panther and another a cougar, and the frame does not name it.
How Grand Theft Auto V did it
This is the reference, not a prediction. The GTA Wiki’s animals page for GTA V lists boars, cats, cows, coyotes, deer, dogs, mountain lions, pigs, rabbits, rats and snakes on land, dolphins, fish, sharks, starfish, stingrays and whales in the water, and crows, hawks, pigeons and seagulls in the air; no alligator is on that list. Some of them fought back: cougars attacked, and the achievement Out of Your Depth was earned by being “eaten underwater by a shark”. Hunting was a side line for Trevor, “hunting down different kinds of animals and sending photos of their corpses to Cletus”. The original PS3 and Xbox 360 versions had limited animals; the enhanced edition for PS4, Xbox One and PC “introduced new animals into the game and a new Wildlife Photography Challenge”, and the wiki dates the same wildlife arriving on PC’s Expanded and Enhanced version to 4 March 2025.
What this page becomes on launch day
From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: which animals can be hunted or handled, whether alligators attack, and what the dog can do, each with the date it was tested. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
Where this comes from
Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked the platform holder is Sony or Microsoft describing their own store or hardware, not Rockstar. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
