GTA 6, how to
How does fighting work in GTA 6?
Short answer
Bare-knuckle fighting is in the Extended Look as a staged event: a backyard ring made of rope and posts over a tarpaulin, two men trading punches and a handful of spectators. The weapon wheel puts a fist in a slot of its own, labelled UNARMED. Dodging, countering and the buttons for either are in no frame. Until launch, the reference is Grand Theft Auto V's melee.

Where the footage shows it
The Extended Look has exactly one fight in it without a gun, and it is not a brawl outside a bar. It is an event: a ring made of rope and posts over a tarpaulin in a backyard, seating dragged round it, and people watching. That frame, plus a fist on the weapon wheel, is the whole of what the material says about fighting with your hands.
What the footage shows
At 9:24 the camera catches the moment one fighter takes a punch: head down, in a white shirt and white trousers with red lettering down the leg, the other man following through bare-chested in sunglasses, a gold chain and salmon shorts. They stand on a blue tarpaulin spread over the ground, creased and stained red in patches, with rope strung round it at waist height on wooden posts. Old mattresses, cushions and a plastic chair edge the sheet; two people watch from chairs by the house wall, one holding a red cup, and a work light stands on a pole. It is a run-down backyard, and the staging is deliberate.
The other frame is the HUD. On the weapon wheel at 17:50 a fist occupies a slot of its own, selected, with UNARMED at the centre and SIDEARM under it in grey. So the hands are a weapon you pick, as they have been since the wheel existed. A press screenshot puts Lucia in a gym between sets, gloves on, a loaded barbell beside her; the gym is back as a place, and whether it raises anything you fight with is not something the picture says.
What no frame shows is the mechanics. There is no dodge, no counter, no lock-on and no prompt for any of them, and the fight at 9:24 is a single blow.
What nobody knows
- The inputs: punch, kick, dodge, block, counter.
- Whether there is a strength or stamina stat, and whether the gym feeds it.
- Whether the backyard fight is a betting event, a mission or a repeatable activity, and whether you can enter it.
- Whether stealth takedowns exist.
- Whether melee weapons have their own moves.
How Grand Theft Auto V did it
This is the reference, not a prediction. The GTA Wiki’s account of unarmed combat runs from Grand Theft Auto IV, which made fighting more advanced and introduced timing, so that you could dodge and counter, to Grand Theft Auto V, where the moves were punches, kicks and headbutts but also slaps to the face and sucker punches, and where a character sneaking up behind somebody could drop them with a single chop to the neck. Underneath it sat a strength stat that boosted melee damage, sped up ladder climbing and reduced the damage you took, and grew by landing hits and playing sports. The backyard ring above is the kind of place that stat would have been for.
What this page becomes on launch day
From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: the inputs, the stats, the takedowns and what the backyard fights are, each with the date it was tested. Until then the short answer at the top stands.

Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked the platform holder is Sony or Microsoft describing their own store or hardware, not Rockstar. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
