How does the phone work in GTA 6?

The series has run on a phone since Liberty City, and GTA 6 plainly has one. What the official material shows of it is not a device but its output: a message, a post, a stream, each drawn onto the world in a different way. That is enough to say the phone is back and that it has changed shape, and not enough to say what is on it.

What the footage shows

At 23:57 of the Extended Look a text message from Lucia appears mid-mission as a semi-transparent card in the middle of the frame, angled with the perspective of the scene so the room shows through it: a cartoon avatar in a pink ring, her name, and three lines of message with their right-hand ends hidden by a hand reaching across the card. The message names a target, Czr, who appears nowhere else in the material. The video shows the same conversation on a phone in Jason’s hand a few seconds earlier; we hold no still of that moment, so the claim that the card surfaces without the player opening anything is a reading of the video, not of a frame.

Two other frames show the world’s media. At 0:41 of Trailer 1 a post fills the screen in the layout a short-video app uses: the clip, a round avatar, the handle DadBodSquad, a Follow button, a caption and comment and heart icons. At 18:25 of the Extended Look, while the player drives, a live stream runs over the picture: a red LIVE badge with 53k, a column of eight chat messages with handles and avatars, floating reactions, and VIEW LIVESTREAM on R3. The second message names the streamer, camilo. The R3 prompt says the stream is something the player can open rather than only something happening on screen.

What nobody knows

• How the phone is brought up, and what its home screen carries: contacts, camera, map, internet, money.
• Whether calls exist, and whether missions still arrive by call or text.
• Whether the player can post, stream or follow, or only watch.
• Whether the phone saves the game, buys things, or hails a taxi, as it did last time.
• Whether Jason and Lucia each have a phone with its own contacts.

How Grand Theft Auto V did it

This is the reference, not a prediction. Grand Theft Auto V kept the phone but changed its job: after the constant friend calls of the game before it, activities appeared on the map instead. Each lead had his own handset, an iFruit for Michael, a Facade for Trevor and a bitterSweet for Franklin, and the phone was a contemporary one, used for the internet as much as for calls. Its camera app, Snapmatic, took photographs and selfies with a set of filters and borders and uploaded them to the Social Club, where they could be tagged and shared onward. Contacts were never removed, so dead characters stayed in the list. The GTA Wiki lists Snapmatic among the things due to return in GTA 6, without a source we can check, so this page does not repeat it as fact.

What this page becomes on launch day

From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: the apps, the inputs, what the phone can buy, save and post, and how the world’s feeds tie to what you do, each with the date it was checked. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
