How do you hunt in GTA 6?

Hunting has more official material behind it than most activities: hunters, a rifle, a park and the animals to match. What it does not have is a single frame of the hunt itself. This page is built from the screenshots and from the last game, which had a hunting system with rules worth knowing before launch.

What the footage shows

A 4K press screenshot puts two hunters mid-stride in waist-high grass under the pines of Mount Kalaga National Park. The one at the right carries a scoped bolt-action rifle across his body, in camouflage dungarees over a bare chest, glasses and a stars-and-stripes cap. The one at the left holds a second rifle upright by the barrel, in a camo cap worn backwards and an orange sleeveless top printed with a wolf’s head. Orange is what a hunter wears to be seen, and a legal requirement in much of the United States; the frame puts orange on a hunter for the reason a hunter wears it.

The park has the animals. Another press screenshot from the same place shows four deer at a drinking spot with a panther walking through the water towards them. Whether either is huntable, the material does not say; they are modelled and they are there. No frame shows a scope view, a shot, a carcass or a score, and nothing in the Extended Look is set in the park.

What nobody knows

• Whether hunting is a scored activity, a mission, a source of money, or a thing you simply do.
• What can be hunted, and whether the panther is prey or predator.
• Whether wind, scent and shot placement matter, as they did last time.
• Whether the rifle is bought, found or handed to you, and whether a bow exists.
• Whether the orange top is a rule the game enforces or a costume.

How Grand Theft Auto V did it

This is the reference, not a prediction. In Grand Theft Auto V hunting belonged to Trevor, and only in daylight: it opened after he met Cletus and finished the mission Fair Game, ran from five in the morning to seven in the evening, and started from Cletus’s trailer, marked on the map by an icon like an elk’s head. The GTA Wiki lists the prey as elk, coyote, boar, cougar and birds. The screen showed the score, the medal, the money and the wind’s direction and speed; sniper ammunition was unlimited for the hunt; every kill had to be photographed and sent to Cletus from the phone, and he paid according to the animal and the shot, with heart, neck and head shots worth more. Two hunters with rifles in an orange top is a different picture from a lone man with a sniper rifle, and that difference is the most interesting thing the screenshot says.

What this page becomes on launch day

From 19 November 2026 this guide is rewritten from the release build: how a hunt starts, what it pays, the rules on wind and shot placement, and what can be shot, each with the date it was tested. Until then the short answer at the top stands.
