Where is GTA 6 set?

Rockstar’s own words, from the first trailer onward: “Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.” Both names are fictional, and both have an obvious real-world model.

Leonida is Florida. Vice City is Miami.

Worth being precise about, because Rockstar has never written either of those sentences. What it has done is show you the Everglades, airboats, art deco on a beachfront, hurricane weather, a keys chain and a panhandle — and name the state Leonida, which is Florida with the letters moved around.

Vice City is not new. It carried Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002, and it has always been Miami. What is new is the scale: this time the city sits inside a state rather than being the whole map.

The six regions

These are Rockstar’s own division rather than ours — they are the folders the official press screenshots came in:

• Vice City — the city itself
• Leonida Keys — the island chain
• Port Gellhorn — the coastal town in the north-west
• Mount Kalaga National Park — forest and high ground
• Grassrivers — the wetlands
• Ambrosia — inland, agricultural

What we do not know

• The size of the map. Rockstar has published no figure, and there is no comparison to Grand Theft Auto V’s that is anything but a guess.
• Whether the six regions are the whole map or the parts shown so far.
• Where the boundaries between them fall.
• Whether anywhere is locked at the start.

The interactive map comes later — it needs the game, not the trailers. What exists today is the list of confirmed places, and that is built from footage you can check yourself.
