What the official material actually contains

Two trailers, ninety-nine press screenshots and the Extended Look, and none of it shows or mentions a multiplayer mode. The store listings describe a single-player experience. Take-Two’s pre-order announcement names two editions and no online component.

That is unusual enough to be worth stating clearly, because GTA Online has been the commercial centre of Rockstar’s business for over a decade and most people reasonably assume a sequel arrives with one.

The one thing that touches it

Digital pre-orders come with a free month of GTA+. That is Rockstar’s existing subscription, and the month is redeemable in GTA Online — the one attached to Grand Theft Auto V. It tells you the subscription is alive and that Rockstar wants GTA 6 buyers inside it. It tells you nothing whatsoever about a GTA 6 online mode, and it is regularly reported as if it did.

What is reasonable to expect, clearly labelled as expectation

Grand Theft Auto V launched in September 2013 and GTA Online opened two weeks later, on 1 October 2013. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in October 2018 with its online mode arriving as a beta the following month. Rockstar has therefore twice separated the single-player launch from the online one.

If that pattern holds, an online mode would be announced close to or after 19 November rather than now. That is a reading of two previous launches, not information, and we are flagging it as such rather than folding it into the answer.

What we do not know

  • Whether GTA 6 has an online mode at all.
  • What it would be called, when it would open, or what it would cost.
  • Whether GTA+ carries into it.
  • Whether it would support crossplay. Rockstar has never shipped crossplay in anything.
