GTA 6, answered
Where is GTA 6 set?
Short answer
The state of Leonida, with Vice City at its centre — Rockstar's own words since the first trailer. Leonida stands in for Florida and Vice City for Miami.
Sources last checked 25 September 2026
Rockstar’s own words, from the first trailer onward: “Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.” Both names are fictional, and both have an obvious real-world model.
Leonida is Florida. Vice City is Miami.
Worth being precise about, because Rockstar has never written either of those sentences. What it has done is show you wetlands full of airboats and alligators, art deco on a beachfront and a chain of keys joined by bridges, describe a stretch of coast as forgotten and a national park as up against the state’s northern border, and name the state Leonida, a name of Rockstar’s own. The reading is ours, and it is the reading everyone who has watched the footage makes.
Vice City is not new. It carried Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and it has always been Miami. What is new is the scale: this time the city sits inside a state rather than being the whole map.
The six regions
These are Rockstar’s own division rather than ours: they are the folders the official press screenshots came in, in the screenshot bundle on Rockstar’s media page, checked on 23 September 2026:
- Vice City: the city itself
- Leonida Keys: the island chain
- Port Gellhorn: the run-down coastal town, in Rockstar’s words Leonida’s forgotten coast
- Mount Kalaga National Park: forest and high ground, up against the state’s northern border in Rockstar’s words
- Grassrivers: the wetlands
- Ambrosia: inland and industrial, with refineries on the horizon
Below the regions, the footage names three counties on signs and badges: Kelly County, Vice-Dale County and Ambrosia County. How the counties relate to the six regions is not something the footage tells you.
We have a page for each region, and for every named place inside them whose name is in official material, on a sign, a shop front, a banner or in Rockstar’s own caption or file name, each shown with the frame it came from. They are on the locations index, eighty-five pages as of 25 September 2026.
The question underneath: is it the whole state?
Nobody can tell you. The six folders are how Rockstar filed ninety-nine screenshots; they are not a statement that the map has six parts, and the footage shows no border. What the footage does show is that Vice City is one region among several, that the wetlands and the park are large enough to carry their own scenes, and that Rockstar’s own minimap, on screen for seconds at a time in the Extended Look, is the only coordinate system anyone outside the studio has seen; the minimap page shows what it displays. Whether there is a map at all, and how big it is, has its own answer: is there a GTA 6 map yet.
What we do not know
- The size of the map. Rockstar has published no figure, and there is no comparison to Grand Theft Auto V’s that is anything but a guess.
- Whether the six regions are the whole map or the parts shown so far.
- Where the boundaries between them fall.
- Whether anywhere is locked at the start.
The interactive map comes later; it needs the game, not the trailers. What exists today is the list of confirmed places, and that is built from footage you can check yourself.
Where this comes from
Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked the platform holder is Sony or Microsoft describing their own store or hardware, not Rockstar. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
