GTA 6, answered
Will GTA 6 be cross-platform?
Short answer
Rockstar has said nothing about crossplay, either way. No multiplayer mode has been announced either, so at launch there is nothing to play across platforms.
Sources last checked 23 September 2026
GTA 6 crossplay has not been announced, and neither has any multiplayer mode, so there is nothing yet to play across platforms. That is not a dodge but the state of the record on 23 September 2026: Rockstar has never mentioned crossplay for GTA 6, either way.
Why the second half matters more than the first
Crossplay is a property of a multiplayer mode. Everything Rockstar has published about GTA 6 describes a single-player game following Jason and Lucia: the trailers, the Extended Look, the product page, Take-Two’s pre-order announcement. The US PlayStation Store listing goes one step further than Rockstar’s own page and calls the game “a single-player experience”; that is the platform holder’s description of the product it is selling, not a Rockstar statement, but it is the plainest sentence on the subject anywhere official. Nothing has been announced that two people on two consoles could play together.
So the honest shape of the answer is: there is no crossplay question to answer yet, because the thing that would need to be cross-platform has not been announced. See will GTA 6 have an online mode.
What the history tells you
Rockstar has never shipped play between PlayStation and Xbox in anything. GTA Online has run its whole life without it and so has Red Dead Online, on every platform they appeared on, and Rockstar’s own support pages describe what cross-network play GTA Online does have as an arrangement between PC storefronts only, with console players kept apart from PC. That is a long, consistent record rather than a promise about GTA 6. But if you are trying to decide which console your friends should buy, it is the most relevant fact available.
The question underneath: which console?
If you and the people you play with are choosing consoles for this game, nothing published lets you choose on crossplay, because there is no multiplayer to be cross-platform. What is published is that the game is the same on both: the same date, the same two editions and the same US prices, in Take-Two’s announcement of 24 June 2026; and a “plays best on PS5” line from Sony’s own blog that promises features of the console, not content. If a multiplayer mode is announced, it will be announced by Rockstar, and the crossplay question becomes real on that day and not before. This page changes the same day, with the announcement quoted.
What would have to happen
Three things, in order: Rockstar announces a multiplayer component; it says which platforms it runs on; it says whether they share sessions. Rockstar has done the first for its previous games and never the third. Until the first happens, every article stating that GTA 6 definitely will, or definitely will not, support crossplay is somebody’s expectation wearing a headline.
What we do not know
- Whether GTA 6 has a multiplayer component at launch or later.
- Whether PS5 and Xbox Series players would ever share a session.
- Whether a future PC version would connect to console players.
- Whether save data or progress moves between platforms. Also unannounced.
Where this comes from
Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked the platform holder is Sony or Microsoft describing their own store or hardware, not Rockstar. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
