GTA 6, answered

How many times has GTA 6 been delayed?

Short answer

Twice. A 2025 window became 26 May 2026 on 2 May 2025, and that became 19 November 2026 on 6 November 2025. No third delay has been announced, and the game has never been cancelled.

Twice, both times on Rockstar’s own Newswire, both times with a new date attached. Neither announcement gave a reason beyond quality. The game has never been cancelled and nothing suggests it is.

The complete timeline

  • 4 December 2023 — Trailer 1. The trailer ends on a card reading Coming 2025, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the first date Rockstar ever gave.
  • 2 May 2025 — first delay. The Newswire announces 26 May 2026. Rockstar: “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
  • 6 May 2025 — Trailer 2. Four days after the delay. Not itself a date change, but it is where a lot of what this site catalogues comes from.
  • 6 November 2025 — second delay. The Newswire announces Thursday 19 November 2026. Rockstar: “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”
  • 25 June 2026 — pre-orders open. Both editions, on every major storefront.
  • 27 August 2026 — An Extended Look. Premiered on Netflix, then on YouTube and Rockstar’s own site the same evening.

So: two delays, roughly eleven months and then roughly six. The Coming 2025 card never carried a month, which is why you will also see this counted as a slip from “fall 2025” — that window came from Take-Two’s investor calls rather than from Rockstar.

Is GTA 6 cancelled?

No, and the question is easy to settle without anyone’s opinion. A cancelled game does not take pre-order money on four storefronts, publish a pre-load date, or get a twenty-six minute showcase premiered on Netflix eleven weeks before release. All three of those happened in 2026.

Why is it taking so long?

Rockstar has said one thing, twice, and it is the same thing: more time, for polish. That is the entire official record. Everything else you will read on this subject — engine trouble, scope, working conditions, a specific team, a specific feature — is not something Rockstar has stated, and we are not going to launder it into a fact by repeating it with a hedge in front.

What can be said without guessing: development was long by any measure. See how long GTA 6 has been in development for the part of that which is actually documented.

Will there be a third delay?

Nobody outside Rockstar knows. What we can tell you is where you would find out first — the Rockstar Newswire, which is where both previous ones appeared with no advance warning — and that this page is updated the same day if it happens, with the announcement quoted rather than summarised.

Where this comes from

Every claim above rests on one of these. Anything marked reported is somebody else telling us what Rockstar said, and is treated as weaker than Rockstar saying it.
