How many times has GTA 6 been delayed?

Twice, both times on Rockstar’s own Newswire, both times with a new date attached. Neither announcement gave a reason beyond quality. The game has never been cancelled and nothing suggests it is.

The complete timeline

• 4 December 2023: Trailer 1. The trailer ends on a card reading Coming 2025, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the first date Rockstar ever gave.
• 2 May 2025: first delay. The Newswire announces 26 May 2026. Rockstar: “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
• 6 May 2025: Trailer 2. Four days after the delay. Not itself a date change, but it is where a lot of what this site catalogues comes from.
• 15 May 2025: Take-Two’s earnings call. Strauss Zelnick, in the transcript MarketBeat published: “I believe affording Rockstar additional time for such a groundbreaking project is a worthy investment.” A reported transcript, not a Rockstar statement.
• 6 November 2025: second delay. The Newswire announces Thursday 19 November 2026. Rockstar: “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”
• 25 June 2026: pre-orders open. Both editions, on every major storefront, with a pre-load date of 12 November in Take-Two’s announcement.
• 27 August 2026: An Extended Look. Premiered on Netflix, then on YouTube and Rockstar’s own site the same evening, per Rockstar’s own Newswire post.

So: two delays. The first cannot be measured in months, because the Coming 2025 card never carried one. The second is a week short of six months, 26 May to 19 November.

Is GTA 6 cancelled?

No, and the question is easy to settle without anyone’s opinion. A cancelled game does not take pre-order money on three storefronts and at retail, publish a pre-load date, or get a showcase of over twenty-six minutes premiered on Netflix twelve weeks before release. All three of those happened in 2026.

Why is it taking so long?

Rockstar has said one thing, twice, and it is the same thing: more time, for polish. Take-Two’s chief executive, Strauss Zelnick, added context on that same call: the game’s “ambition and complexity” is “greater than any previous Rockstar title”. That, and his line about a worthy investment, is the entire official record. Everything else you will read on this subject, engine trouble, scope, working conditions, a specific team, a specific feature, is not something Rockstar has stated, and we are not going to launder it into a fact by repeating it with a hedge in front.

Will there be a third delay?

Nobody outside Rockstar knows. This is the question people are really asking when they ask how many times it has been delayed, and the honest answer has two halves. What is different from the position before either previous slip: Rockstar is taking money, since 25 June 2026, and has committed to a pre-load date, 12 November, for digital pre-orders; both earlier delays came while nothing was on sale. What is not different: both were announced on the Newswire with no advance warning, the second six and a half months before the date it replaced.
