White offshore race boat with a canopy

A long, low offshore race boat running past the boat party in the Keys, white with a lime accent and WHIR·WIND across the hull. One character of that word is under spray, and the smaller line below it sits under this site's floor, so neither is a name we can hand you.

A long, narrow offshore hull at speed, low in the frame and throwing a wall of spray that swallows its own stern. The topsides are white. The deck ahead of the cockpit is closed and comes to a point, with dark round scoops set into it in pairs, and behind that a low angular canopy rather than an open screen. Nobody is visible aboard.

Across the hull side, in a dark blue-violet, is a word in heavy sans capitals, comfortably above this site's floor for lettering. Eight of its nine characters come apart cleanly on the master: W, H, I, R, then a gap, then W, I, N, D. The fifth is behind a burst of spray and does not separate at all, on the true pixel grid at eight times as at one. WHIRLWIND is the obvious completion and we are telling you it is a completion, not a reading. Ahead of the word sits a round emblem with a white spiral in it; behind the word the white gives way to a lime-green graphic panel that runs aft.

Lower down on the bow there is a second line at about a third the height of the first, and that puts it under the floor: its characters are recorded as our own reading on the sighting and are not printed here. The word everyone would complete it to is a category of business, not a name, and it would not name the boat either way.

This is the boat at the far left of the boat-party still in the Keys, and this crop is that corner of the frame at full size. GTA 5's offshore racers, the Speeder and the Jetmax, carried sponsor lettering along the hull in the same way, and that is why a big word over a smaller one on a race hull is as likely to be a sponsor as a model.

• What the lettering names. On a race boat a big word over a smaller one is as likely to be a sponsor as a model, so this page carries a descriptive name and not WHIRLWIND.
• The fifth character of the big word, behind spray, and the whole of the small line, under the floor.
• The whole stern, the engines and the drives, all of which are inside the boat's own spray.
• Whether this is the same hull as any other go-fast on this site. Nothing in this frame settles it.
• Everything measured: top speed, handling, where it spawns
