Assault rifle

The most-photographed weapon in the official material: an AR-pattern carbine that turns up four times, once sprayed turquoise with a brass-coloured magazine.

The four appearances are not the same gun dressed the same way. On a rooftop at night Jason holds one finished in turquoise with a copper or brass magazine and a gold watch on the wrist behind it — a weapon somebody has had painted. In a jewellery store he holds a plain black one with a rail-mounted optic, a vertical foregrip and a straight box magazine. A third is carried by a hunter in a swamp. A fourth appears during the vault sequence.

The details that repeat are the ones that matter: a flat-top receiver with a rail, a tubular handguard with cooling slots, a straight box magazine with witness ribs, and a collapsible stock. That is an AR-15 pattern, and the variations sit on top of it.

The turquoise one is the interesting one. A weapon finish that is neither black nor camouflage means a customisation system, and it is one of two pieces of evidence for that in the material — the other is a pistol with a compensator on the barrel.

What we still do not know

• Whether any of these is the Duke 556 Assault Rifle named elsewhere
• Whether the turquoise finish is a paint job you buy or a fixed variant
• Which attachments are swappable
• Whether the hunter's rifle is the same weapon or a civilian version
