What Rockstar says about Ambrosia

Rockstar’s banner reads Keeping Leonida Sweet, and the line under it: the battle for the health and wealth of Leonida begins here. The description places Ambrosia in the heart of the state, where American industry and old school values still reign supreme, whatever the cost. It names one employer, the Allied Crystal sugar refinery, which provides the jobs, and says the local biker gang provides almost everything else.

Both halves are in the frames, though neither by name. Rockstar’s caption for the night overview speaks of smoke stacks in the distance, and none of the official images we have shows the name Allied Crystal, so which of the stacks is the refinery, if any, is not yet a sighting. The biker gang is in the riding shot: Rockstar’s caption calls the riders a motorcycle gang riding together in matching leather vests down a road in Ambrosia.

Heart of Leonida is also a position. With Mount Kalaga on the northern border and Port Gellhorn on the coast, it is one of three regions Rockstar has placed in words, and the only one placed inland.

• Ambrosia Raceway Park. A roadside billboard with a chequered-flag border, a 555 number and NEXT RIGHT.
• Ambrosia County. A dark road sign on twin posts at the left of the riding shot, on the road the motorcycle club rides down. Whether the county contains the town is not stated anywhere official.

What the frames show

Six screenshots, and the motorcycle club is in two of them. Eight riders in view come down the main road past a filling station with their colours on their backs, on most of them a hooded skull over an open book; the bottom rocker on the rider in the middle reads AMBRO before a hanging chain covers the rest, and the club has a page of its own. In the second, a man with an ENFORCER patch on his vest stands with a woman whose arm is draped in front of him, a revolver in her hand, and motorcycles behind them. Election boards in red, white and blue line the verge in the riding shot, their names under this site’s letter floor.

Two are landscape. The night overview, in Rockstar’s own caption the Ambrosia skyline with smoke stacks in the distance: industry and highway, the stacks lit against the dark, a water tower with a red, white and blue tank over the town, and wetland in the foreground. And the back country at sunset, as Rockstar’s caption has it: a high-voltage pylon in the foreground and a lattice mast hung with aerials farther off, fire burning in two patches across a planted field, chimneys smoking on the horizon and a light aircraft in the sky.

The last two are closer in. Inside a car at a bikini car wash: a man in a red cap at the wheel, a woman leaning in at the driver’s window, and two women in stars-and-stripes bikinis soaping the windscreen; the dashboard has a page of its own. And a mud party: roll-caged buggies in the mud, people standing on the vehicles and on the bed of a pickup, and a man in a cowboy hat making horns at the lens while someone holds a can right in front of it.

Ambrosia is the part of Leonida that is not coastal and not city, and the material photographs it as a place with its own institutions: a club and an election.
