Speedboat

A planing speedboat with a small cabin, caught twice from the air — once as a pair of wakes on the bay and once alone off a headland.

Both sightings come from press screenshots shot from above, and in both the boat is moving. In the first, two of them run the bay in parallel with the towers of Vice City on the shore behind, each throwing a long white wake behind it and a fan of spray to either side. In the second a single boat runs off a headland below two curved residential towers, the hull up on the plane with the bow clear of the water.

What the hull shows at this distance is a low windscreen, a small forward cabin or cuddy, and an open cockpit behind it. That is a day boat rather than a cruiser: no flybridge, no tender, nothing on the roof.

It is the other end of the scale from the motor yacht in this database, and it is the sort of boat the bay is full of rather than the sort somebody parks at a marina to be looked at.

How to recognise it

• Up on the plane in both sightings, bow clear of the water
• A low windscreen with a small forward cabin behind it
• An open cockpit aft — no flybridge, no upper deck
• Photographed from the air, twice, on the Vice City bay
• Long white wake with a fan of spray either side
