INCOME TAX is painted in dark red serif capitals on an ochre fascia board, with two smaller words after it that do not resolve, a white ribbon device below carrying blue lettering that does not resolve either, and a third line of small text under that. The letters are rough-edged and hand-done rather than cut, and all of it sits on the right-hand half of the board, leaving the left half bare ochre. Next to it the neighbouring shop has a maroon awning with lettering of its own that does not resolve at this size.

Around the board the press image is a street under an overpass: a pink deco block with oval windows and blue arches rises above the shop, a mural wall runs to its left, and the overpass pillars in front carry a giant P, a robed figure holding a red book with a large E on it, and an R, with a quad bike and a wheelie-pulling motorcycle in the road and two men sitting against a pillar. In the middle of the road sits a blue sedan on chrome wheels.

A storefront tax preparer is a very specific American business, seasonal and cash-driven, and putting one here is the kind of detail that makes a neighbourhood read as lived-in rather than generic. What the smaller lines add, the board keeps to itself at this size: they are there, and they are under this site’s floor for lettering.
