Stealing a car

Stealing a car in GTA 6 is a choice, not a button. Two prompts appear on the door: SLIM JIM on triangle, SMASH WINDOW on circle.

The Extended Look frame has a man leaning into the window frame of a dark red coupe parked at the kerb. Beside his hands, drawn in world space on the car itself, are two options stacked: a triangle glyph and SLIM JIM, a circle glyph and SMASH WINDOW.

That is the whole finding and it is a significant one. Every previous Grand Theft Auto resolved car theft into a single contextual action; here it is presented as two methods with, presumably, two different consequences — one quiet and slow, one fast and loud.

The street around him is worth noting too. W. BLANCO'S CUBAN FOODS is on the building behind, a mural of an eagle, a flag and a rifle covers the side wall, and a line of older pickups and sedans is parked along the kerb.

How to recognise it

  • Two prompts at once on the car door: SLIM JIM on triangle, SMASH WINDOW on circle
  • Drawn in world space on the vehicle, not in a HUD corner
  • A dark red coupe parked at the kerb
  • W. BLANCO'S CUBAN FOODS and an eagle mural behind

The frame it comes from

The frame is Extended Look at 6:04.90. It is 1920 by 1080, and the vehicle occupies 768 by 594 of it. Also in it: W Blanco's Cuban Foods, a water tower, a red four-door muscle sedan, a beige squarebody pickup, a dark pickup with a bed rack, a white panel van with graffiti, SUV with a roof rack, a dark 80s sedan, and a light-coloured sedan.

What we still do not know

  • Whether a slim jim has to be carried, or found
  • Whether smashing the window draws attention or a wanted level
  • Whether the choice exists on every vehicle or only some
  • Whether there is a third method for newer cars
