Giant letters spelling VICE CITY stand against a pink-lit sky, uplit from the ground, with the nose of an aircraft, gear down, dipping in above them. It opens the press pack's Vice City set.

The letters are structures, not a sign: weathered pale panels several storeys tall, streaked with rust, standing in a row on open ground with steel bracing behind them and ground-level floodlights washing up their faces. The sky behind them is clouded and lit pink, with an orange glow low down that shows through the gaps between the letters. Palms stand at the left end and the towers of an industrial plant at the right. It is the first image in the press pack’s Vice City set.

A twin-engine business jet crosses the frame above the letters with its landing gear down, its engines on the rear fuselage and a T-tail; inside this crop its nose, the underside of the forward fuselage and the nose gear dip below the top edge. Gear down means it is on approach, which is the closest thing in the frame to an argument that these letters mark an airport.

Whether this is a monument, a film-set relic or an airport marker, the image does not say. What it does is give the city an icon that is not a skyline, which is what the VICE letters elsewhere in the material do too. Vice City has been the series’ Miami since the first Grand Theft Auto in 1997, and the 2002 game carried its name. The last game gave Los Santos the Vinewood sign on its hill; this is the same trick on flat ground, with the letters built big enough to stand in for the hill.

How to recognise it

  • Letters several storeys tall, built as structures
  • Weathered pale panels on steel bracing legs, uplit from the ground
  • An orange glow low in the sky behind the letters
  • The nose and lowered nose gear of an aircraft dipping in above the letters

The frame it comes from

The frame is a still from the official Press pack, which carries no timecode. It is 3840 by 2160, and the subject occupies 3840 by 1512 of it. Also in it: Vice City and a business jet on approach.

These figures come from the dataset, not from the prose above. We measure everything and claim what counts. How we work

What we still do not know

  • What the letters are for
  • Where in the map they stand
  • Whether they can be climbed or entered
  • Whether they relate to the separate VICE letters monument
