Street takeovers

A street takeover seen from directly above: cars doing donuts in the middle of a junction at night, tyre smoke everywhere and a crowd standing in the road.

The trailer frame is an overhead shot. At the centre of the intersection two cars are turning inside their own length, one of them lit magenta from underneath. Smoke fills the junction and spills down all four streets. People stand in a ring around them, phones up, and more line the pavements.

The roads are blocked by parked cars at every approach, which is what makes this a takeover rather than a race: somebody has closed the junction.

Underglow is the detail worth recording. It is visible under at least one car here and again in a later street scene, which puts vehicle lighting back in the series after being cut from GTA V at launch.

How to recognise it

• An intersection closed off by parked cars on every approach
• Cars turning inside their own length, tyre smoke filling the junction
• Magenta underglow under at least one car
• A ring of onlookers filming on phones
• Shot from directly overhead, at night

The frame it comes from

The frame is Trailer 1 at 0:45.47. It is 1920 by 1080, and the vehicle occupies 1920 by 1015 of it. Also in it: a crossroads at night.

What we still do not know

• Whether takeovers are an event you can join or start
• Whether underglow is a customisation option
• Whether the police break them up
• Whether this is the same system as the Real Dimez frame, where a duo dances on a car bonnet at one
