The swamp: stilt houses over the water, airboats in the duckweed, alligators on the jetty and the city skyline visible through the haze behind it all.

Nine images make this the second most-photographed place in the material. The overview shows a settlement built entirely on pilings — restaurants and shops on stilts, boardwalks between them, boats moored underneath — with the towers of Vice City on the horizon. Another shows the same waterway from the air with cars ploughing through it during a chase, a helicopter overhead.

The close shots are about the life. Three hunters sit on a jetty with a dead alligator across it and an airboat behind them. A bearded man raises a break-action shotgun in a shed where an alligator hangs from a beam. An airboat is photographed straight down from above, sitting in bright green duckweed, its cage and rudder picked out against the water.

It is a working landscape rather than a wilderness. Everything in it — the boardwalks, the boats, the sheds — is built by people who live there.

What we still do not know

• How large the wetland is
• Whether airboats are the only way through the shallow sections
• Whether the stilt settlement is enterable
• Whether alligators are a hazard, a hunt, or both
