Luna Void

The building is in the frame at 15:25 of the Extended Look, next door to Lickety Split, the ice cream parlour on the corner. The front is white and flat, topped by a straight parapet and split in two by a pilaster that rises above the roofline to a stepped top. On the left half LUNA stands in gold capitals over a recessed doorway, where two women are standing; on the right half VOID stands in dark grey capitals over a row of tall glass panes under a flat dark canopy. Both words read in full on the master, letter by letter, so neither is completed from the other.

The detailing is the stepped and banded kind Miami Beach is known for: besides the stepped pilaster, incised bands run along the wall beneath both words. A row of short yellow bollards stands along the pavement to the left of the doorway, and further left a metal ladder climbs the wall to the roof, with safety hoops round its upper part and an air-conditioning unit on the wall beside it.

What is not settled is whether that is one name or two. The words share a serif capital and a height, which reads as one sign; but they differ in colour, and each stands over its own front, a door under LUNA and a glass front under VOID, which reads as two tenants side by side. A single name set in two colours would look the same from the street. The page is filed under both words together until something shows otherwise.
