Benefactor Schafter

SCHAFTER in raised chrome on the boot lid and the maker's diamond badge beside it: a name read off the car rather than looked up.

The car is a dark saloon photographed square from behind in dappled light, and the two things that matter are both on the boot lid. SCHAFTER sits on the left in raised chrome capitals, letter by letter, and that is where the name on this page comes from. In the centre is a badge: a diamond outline with two mirrored shapes inside it, the same device that sits on the grille of the black sport sedan filmed two minutes earlier in the same Extended Look. The second crop on this page is the boot lid with those two side by side, because the difference between them is the whole point. Measured on the master, the capitals of SCHAFTER stand fourteen pixels tall: every letter separates at one to one, and that is still under this site’s floor of twenty for lettering, so the sighting records the word as under the floor. What that means for the name on this page is an open question, recorded rather than decided here.

Below the badge hangs a pale plate with dark characters, reading B1M before a small orange emblem and 9Q4 after it, the M half behind the emblem’s leaves; the same plate is read on the Leonida plate page. The tail lamps are wide horizontal units with clear strips set into the red, there is a modest lip on the trailing edge of the boot, and a pair of exhaust outlets shows under the rear valance.

The car stands on the road at the foot of a ramp into a parking structure, with the minimap and the star display on screen, so this is the player’s camera in play; a sign for Redwood Suites is further along the same frame, on its own page. Sunlight is coming through trees and breaking across the roof and rear screen in patches.

Two more frames of the same car came in later on 23 September. At 14:36 its flank fills the picture as it passes the camera, a passenger in a red bandana behind the glass, and the lettering on the rear wing stands sixty pixels tall: S, C, H, A, F, T and E separate cleanly, and the R is beyond the right-hand edge of the frame. That is the first time the name has passed this site’s floor for lettering, and it is still not a complete reading, because the word runs out of the picture. At 15:25 the car drifts through a junction under four wanted stars with its rear screen crazed and smoke off the rear tyres, past the Lickety Split parlour, and the boot lid carries the same word at sixteen pixels, under the floor as at 15:49.

• Which Schafter this is. The name is on the car; a trim or a variant is not.
• Whether a name that separates at one to one but sits under the twenty-pixel floor can carry a page; the capitals measure fourteen pixels at 15:49, and sixty at 14:36 with the last letter beyond the edge of the frame
• What the two shapes inside the diamond badge actually are. We read them as letters and cannot name them.
• The third character on the plate, read as an M with its right half behind the emblem’s leaves
• Whether this and the black sport sedan are the same model
• Everything measured: top speed, acceleration, handling, price, where it spawns

A note on this record

Half of the name on this page is read and half is inherited, and it is worth being exact about which. SCHAFTER is ours: it is spelled out in chrome on the boot lid, legible letter by letter, and the crop is on this page. Benefactor is not written anywhere on the car. What is there is the diamond badge, and Benefactor is what this series has called that badge for twenty years. We keep the badge as evidence because a device you can see and match across two frames is worth more than a word you were told — but the manufacturer in front of the model name is a convention we have inherited rather than a reading we made, and that is the honest version.
